Helsinki Iconic Color-Core by B+N Design
While home for the holidays, I participated in a lively trip to Home Depot for the meticulous perusing of no less than two thousand paint samples with seriously fantastic names.
“Nauseating chartreuse!” I exclaimed.
“Toasted Sage,” the card read.
At the end of the day, I threw up my hands in a grand show of exhaustion, proclaiming…
“WHY DON’T WE JUST WALLPAPER THE DAMN ROOM WITH NICE PICTURES?!”
Normally, the sight of mass produced Martha-Stewart-esque wallpaper causes my complexion to turn “Nauseating Chartreuse.” However, thanks to Mike Perry and B+N Design, I have changed my mind. In fact, I am saving my metaphorical dollars in order to bedeck my metaphorical contemporary home with these real wall coverings. This time, thank goodness for mass production!
1. Mike Perry is a Brooklyn-based illustrator and designer. He is also the creator of one of my must-have books, HANDJOB – A Catalog of Type.
Perry's boat wallpaper raises my spirits. Currently, it is seventeen degrees in Philadelphia. If my room looked like this, I would be enticed to frolic in the waves with glee.

2. B+N design in Burlingame, CA has premiered a series of decorative wall panels. The panels are sold in coverage units like wallpaper and are constructed of laminate atop carved wood. B+N's site says that “they can be sawn, nailed, screwed, glued, or simply mounted on walls.”
Well, fancy that! The motifs range from the organic Helsinki branch pattern to the Bauhaus-inspired Line City design.

And after all is said and done…
We went with “Toasted Sage.”
Maybe next time.
